Pass the Popcorn: What In-Room Movies Did Hotel Guests Watch Most in April?

By Terry Trucco

Pass the Popcorn | tags: A Good Day to Die Hard, Broken City, Django Unchained, Gangster Squad, Identity Thief, Jack Reacher, Parker, Safe Haven, Silver Linings Playbook, This is 40, Zero Dark Thirty | May 2, 2013

Jack Reacher, based on the best-selling book One Shot by Lee Childs, took in around $80 million at US box offices – not great for a $60 million movie with Tom Cruise in the leading role. (Translation: don’t expect a sequel.)

But it was a big hit in hotel rooms last month, coming in first with pay-to-view hotel audiences in the US and Canada as well as New York City.

What else were hotel guests watching during the cruelest month? As always, our Hotel Viewer Top Ten culled from more than 1.5 million rooms comes courtesy of LodgeNet, provider of in-room hotel entertainment in the US And Canada. (more…)

I can see why producers want their movies to win Academy Awards. They stick around in secondary markets like hotel rooms and make money. Witness last month’s stats for hotels across the US and Canada and in New York City: five of the top ten in-room movies were Best Picture nominees.

To see who they were – and who else made the top ten list — scroll down. As always, the stats come courtesy of LodgeNet, suppliers of in-room entertainment to 1.5 million hotel rooms in the U.S and Canada.

Does anyone go to movie theaters anymore? February was Oscar month, and it seems a lot of guests used hotel room visits to catch the 2012 Academy Award nominees. (So much for witnessing Skyfall’s technical effects on the big screen.) Whatever. No envelope needed. Scroll down to see the month’s top ten hotel room hits.

As always this month’s round-up is compiled by LodgeNet, suppliers of in-room entertainment to 1.6 million hotel rooms in the U.S and Canada.

Abraham Lincoln or James Bond? That seemed the big question hotel guests pondered when choosing in-room movies last month.  (Denzel Washington and Liam Neeson were also deep in the mix.)  To find out if Oscar contenders trumped blockbusters for the top spots, read on.

Pass the Popcorn | tags: End of Watch, Hope Springs, Hotel Translyvania, Looper, Pitch Perfect, Seven Psychopaths, Taken 2, Ted, The Bourne Legacy, The Dark Knight Rises, Trouble with the Curve | January 4, 2013

Once again it’s time to take a peek into hotel rooms across the nation and Canada (and New York City) and report on what guests chose to pay to watch on their flatpanel screens.  The verdict? Ted, the trash-talking bear, had a great two-month run. But last month he fell – though not very far — from his cushy perch at Number 1. Taken 2 and Liam Neeson overtook him. No teds there.

Read on for the rest. As always, the numbers come from LodgeNet, suppliers of in-room entertainment to 1.6 million hotel rooms in the U.S and Canada. (more…)

Fans of action thrillers like big screens, it seems. How else to explain The Dark Knight Rises’ status as the Number 2 hotel room movie in the United States and Canada and New York City in November, the first month it was available to hotel viewers? Batman got beat out of the top spot by last month’s winners — potty-mouthed teddy-bear Ted (nationwide) and the gritty Bourne Legacy (in New York). (more…)

Pass the Popcorn | tags: "Arbitrage", hotel movies, Magic Mike, Marvel's The Avengers, Men in Black 3, Pass the Popcorn, Prometheus, Savages, Special Forces, Ted, The Amazing Spider Man, The Bourne Legacy, The Watch | November 6, 2012

A foul-mouthed teddy bear was the big winner in hotel rooms last month followed by an action franchise that got tweaked. And in something we rarely see – we’ve been Passing the Popcorn for nine months – the four most popular hotel room movies across the Nation and Canada and in New York City were identical. Guests dug Bourne — and that bear!

No surprise Arbitrage was a hit with New York hotel viewers last month. The sleek financial thriller set in Bernie Madoff’s pre-incarceration Manhattan features lavish footage of two New York City hotels, The Pierre and The Plaza and a big kiss to The Sherry-Netherland.

Elsewhere in hotel rooms around the nation and Canada Arbitrage came in fourth (Marvel’s The Avengers is uber-resilient). Here’s the complete list, as always provided by LodgeNet, suppliers of in-room entertainment to 1.6 million hotel rooms in the U.S. and Canada. (more…)

What was the most watched movie in hotel rooms across the U.S. and Canada and in New York City last month?
