Holidays: Need a Last-Minute Gift? Hotel Shops Want to Help

By Terry

Holidays | tags: Ace, Gansevoort Meatpacking District, hotels, Hudson, The Plaza, The Standard | December 16, 2011

As hotels have edged into endeavors that have nothing to do with lodging – art galleries! screening rooms! bingo nights! – retail scores high as a splashy extracurricular effort.  With Barneys edging out Walgreens as a role model, it can be easier to find a one-of-a-kind necklace than a newspaper – remember those? – in the shop adjacent to the lobby.

This can be a good thing as the holidays move into full swing. We set out on an informal shopping spree, camera in hand, and came up with a sampling of items that would look good under a tree, from stocking stuffers to big ticket.

Behold, the first annual Overnight New York holiday gift guide. (more…)

The Five Best: New York Hotel Libraries

Books at the Library Hotel

We love hotel libraries, book-lined havens – or at the very least, a cozy room with a couple of well-stocked shelves – where you can climb into a big, squishy sofa or club chair. Sure, you can byo, but half the fun is discovery – that obscure novel you missed, a travel or photography book you’ve never seen or a Dutch design magazine you didn’t know existed.

Paper rules at hotel libraries. Elsie de Wolfe knew nothing warms up a room like books, and generations of decorators absorbed her edict. (more…)

Fashion Week: New(ish) Designers Check in at the Hudson, W and Roger Smith

By Terry

Fashion Week | tags: Gail Travis, Grey Ant, hotels, Hudson, Jenne Lombardo, Public Shool, Roger Smith Hotel, Semi-automatic, W Hotels | September 13, 2011

We’ve been noticing an abnormally high percentage of rangy, good-looking people around town. That means one thing – Fashion Week is back.  More than 200 designers unveil their creations during the Spring/Summer 2012 shows at the tents in Lincoln Center and a host of private venues through September 15.

What are New York’s fashion-forward hotels doing besides gleefully celebrating their full – or nearly full — houses? Hint: think “emerging designers ” – and fashion by association, that hint of glamour that rubs off on anyone around it.

All About: Hudson Hotel’s Semi-Automatic

By Terry

All About | tags: Catcher in the Rye, hotels, Hudson, Kim Walker, Marcel Wanders, Morgans Hotel Group, Semi-automatic | August 15, 2011

Hudson's semi-automatic.

Semi-automatic? It’s a vending machine, not a weapon, and you can see this big, oddly futuristic contraption in the lobby at the Hudson here in New York as well as at the Mondrian South Beach and the Sanderson in London.

As anyone knows who’s ever craved a midnight Coke, vending machines are nothing new at hotels. But the semi-automatic, with its singular appearance and attention-grabbing offerings – 24-karat gold handcuffs, anyone? – is different. We road tested – and blogged about — the Hudson’s semi-automatic a while back, but eager to know more, we spoke with Kim Walker, senior vice-president for marketing at Morgans Hotel Group.

Trending: Hotels that Put You to Work (No, You Don’t Have to Change the Sheets)

By Terry

Trending | tags: Grand Hyatt New York, hotels, Hudson, Residence Inn New York Times Square, Semi-automatic | May 31, 2011

That much-discussed Yobot robotic arm that grabs and stores your luggage at the soon-to-open Yotel Times Square got us thinking about other nifty labor saving devices – as in the saving of the hotel staff’s labor – around town. We visited three hotels with clever do-it-yourself amenities, read the instructions and pushed the appropriate buttons. How did we fare? (more…)

A Chat With: Travis Chamberlain, Director of “Green Eyes”

Erin Markey and Adam Couperthwaite in Green Eyes.

It’s not news when a hotel room serves as a backdrop for a movie or photo shoot. But a play?

Welcome to Room 620 at the Hudson hotel. As noted previously here,  Green Eyes, a rarely seen one-act by Tennessee Williams, written in 1970 and published in 2008, is performed in this snug little suite through January 23.  Fortunately for claustrophobic types, the play is short – just 35 minutes – with just two characters, a warring pair of newlyweds honeymooning in a seedy New Orleans hotel room.
