By Terry

We love the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. A classic liminal period, it’s an opportunity to work less (or not at all), see a movie, read a book, catch your breath. And if you’re like us, you’ll probably stop by a hotel (or two). Here are 10 worth checking out even if you don’t check in. (more…)

The Five Best: Hotels for Bike Riders

By Terry

The Five Best: | tags: bike riding, Element New York Times Square West, hotels, Ink48., James Hotel, Paramount Hotel, The Maritime Hotel, The Plaza, The Standard | July 27, 2011

New York isn’t Amsterdam. But since 1993, the addition of 100 miles of greenway paths has changed life for bike lovers. We wouldn’t recommend plowing into midtown traffic unless you’re Tour de France fit  – or a bike messenger. But the city’s growing network of bike lanes offers savvy riders a fun, pollution-free way to get from Point A to Point B and take in the sights that whirl by.

These five properties (plus bonus mentions) lead the growing band of hotels that house bikes to lend or rent to guests. (Condolences to the Hotel Gansevoort Meatpacking District, whose fleet of Puma bikes was stolen and, as of this writing, has not been replaced). (more…)

In the News: Trip Advisor’s Top Hotels of 2011

By Terry

In the News | tags: Ace, Casablanca, hotels, James Hotel, Library, Standard, TripAdvisor | January 19, 2011

We love best hotel lists, so when Trip Advisor’s Travelers’ Choice awards for the top hotels of 2011 landed in our e-mail box today, we clicked on as fast as we could. Hmmm. Did you know the top hotel in the world is . . . the Golden Well (U Zlate Studne) in Prague, Czech Republic?

We’d never heard of the place so eagerly scoured Trip Advisor’s write-up and visitor photos. (more…)

Holidays: Cheers!

Holidays,Weekend Drink | tags: drinks, Empire Hotel, hotels, Intercontinental New York Barclay, James Hotel | December 28, 2010

Christmas 2010 is history, but the holidays roar on. And so does this season’s round of holiday drinks

The Bah humbug.

served at hotels around town. While complex signature drinks are more plentiful at New York hotels than ever – Red Pepper Daisy, anyone? — holiday libations are surprisingly rare.

Last season, the Algonquin concocted six special holiday drinks, including a killer eggnog. But when we stopped by to sample this season’s offerings, alas, there were none.

We were also intrigued when we heard of Hilton’s Twelve Days of Christmas cocktails (Two Turtle Doves — Baileys, rum and espresso – sounded particularly promising). Too bad they’re only available at Hilton hotels in Great Britain. (more…)

Fashion Week: Between the Seams

By Terry

Fashion Week | tags: Andrew Buckler, Fashion Week, hotel uniforms, hotels, James Hotel | September 10, 2010

Fashion Week's home base.

New York Fashion Week unspools through September 16 in the big, gray cube planted temporarily next to Lincoln Center’s Metropolitan Opera House.  With over 100 designers strutting their Spring/Summer 2011 collections – and with more than a dozen new style-conscious hotels opening in New York this year – you’d think the two realms might overlap. And you’d be right.

Which is why we found ourselves elbowing our way into the Box, a midnight black runway room, for Andrew Buckler’s menswear show.

Buckler, a British designer known for eccentrically urbane designs aimed at cool, creative types, devised the cheeky uniforms – urban hipster meets Gangs of New York – sported by the staff at the new James Hotel, which opened September 1. (more…)
