I can see why producers want their movies to win Academy Awards. They stick around in secondary markets like hotel rooms and make money. Witness last month’s stats for hotels across the US and Canada and in New York City: five of the top ten in-room movies were Best Picture nominees.

Fans of action thrillers like big screens, it seems. How else to explain The Dark Knight Rises’ status as the Number 2 hotel room movie in the United States and Canada and New York City in November, the first month it was available to hotel viewers? And in something we rarely see – we’ve been Passing the Popcorn for nine months – the four most popular hotel room movies across the Nation and Canada and in New York City were identical. No surprise Arbitrage was a hit with New York hotel viewers last month. The sleek financial thriller set in Bernie Madoff’s pre-incarceration Manhattan features lavish footage of two New York City hotels, The Pierre and The Plaza and a big kiss to The Sherry-Netherland.

You know it’s summer when you’ve got action movies at the multiplex and comedies in hotel rooms.

Hotel guests across the nation watched 21 Jump Street, about two hapless undercover cops sent back to high school to bring down a drug ring, more than any other pay-to-view movie last month. And in New York City hotels, American Reunion, the class reunion of the all-grown-up American Pie crowd, led the pack, with 21 Jump Street, nipping at its heels.  In other words, high school ruled from coast to coast – just in time for graduation. Once again we’re back with two of our favorite top-10 lists – the Hollywood movies most watched by guests in hotel rooms in New York City and across the nation.

During May the lists were similar with one big difference: John Carter, the interplanetary sci-fi extravaganza that was more box office bust than blockbuster, scored a spot on the national list but not in New York. And Wanderlust, the Jennifer Anniston/Paul Rudd comedy about a couple trading big city life for a commune, was a hit, of sorts, with hotel guests in this big city but not beyond.  Go figure. (more…)
